Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4
MW4 DMZ Early Access: start date, who qualifies, and what to do first
DMZ Early Access is the three-day window between the campaign early access launch on October 16 and the full release of Modern Warfare 4 on October 23. It is open to digital pre-orders only, it runs on a separate progress track from the campaign, and the first session is where most people hit a wall. This guide covers the dates, the eligibility rule, the fixes, and what the window is actually good for.
The three numbers you need
October 20, 2026 at 10 AM PT is the start. Digital pre-order or pre-purchase is the requirement — the standard digital edition and the Vault edition both count, physical copies are not named in the official wording. And October 23 is when early access ends and the full game launches.
What DMZ Early Access actually is
DMZ is Modern Warfare 4's extraction shooter: you deploy into the Hajin exclusion zone with a squad or alone, loot, complete contracts, and try to get your gear back out. Run out of time or die and you lose most of what you were carrying.
DMZ Early Access is simply that mode, playable before the campaign and multiplayer unlock. It comes with its own dedicated progression track — DMZ levels run 1 to 70 — and the Forward Operating Base, your hub inside the mode, unlocks new stations as that level goes up. Your DMZ level is separate from your multiplayer rank.
That separation matters for one practical reason: you can start climbing DMZ levels on day one, because DMZ levels do not require the campaign to be finished.
Is this the same thing as the old MWIII DMZ early access?
No. Modern Warfare III had its own DMZ early access period in 2024, and searches for"dmz early access" still surface that older event. This guide covers theModern Warfare 4 window that opened on October 20, 2026. If you are reading a 2024 guide or a 2024 forum thread, the dates, the map, and the progression rules in it are not the ones below.
The four questions everyone has
Every DMZ early access search lands on one of these four. Each has a page of its own with the full detail.
Am I eligible?
You need a digital pre-order or pre-purchase. Standard digital and Vault both qualify.
Check who qualifies →When does it open for me?
10 AM PT on October 20, which is the evening of October 20 or the early hours of October 21 for most of Asia and Australia.
See every time zone →Why is it not working for me?
Locked, Gear Up stuck, the game will not launch, black screen, connection errors — each has its own fix.
Troubleshoot by symptom →What should I actually do in the window?
Unlock the FOB stations, hit the DMZ level cap, and bank the gear you want to keep.
Plan the FOB progression →The October 22 vs October 23 conflict
If you are checking the Steam store page, you may have seen it list the game as"Coming 22 Oct, 2026". The official DMZ page and the official community announcement both say October 23 for the full launch.
We are not going to invent a reconciliation for that. Activision has not published an explanation we could find, and the difference is more likely to be a store-page listing artefact than a separate launch event. Our advice: treat October 23 as the launch date, because that is what the official channels say, and plan your early access session aroundOctober 20, which is the date the official DMZ page states for the mode itself.
Where the two dates come from
The official DMZ page on callofduty.com states that DMZ Early Access begins on October 20. The Steam store page headline reads "Coming 22 Oct, 2026". Both pages were checked on October 21, 2026. Every guide on this site uses the official October 23 launch date and flags the store page difference wherever it matters.

Planning your first three days
The window is short, and the mode is unforgiving with your gear, so the order of operations matters more than the number of hours you put in.
- Before the window: confirm your purchase unlocks DMZ, start the download, and check you have the storage for it. Therequirements and preload page has the numbers and the platform-by-platform install paths.
- Hour one: do not go straight into Hajin. Open the Forward Operating Base and clear the early DMZ orders, because the station unlocks are what turn the mode from a loot run into a progression system. TheFOB progression guide lists every station and its level requirement.
- Hours two and three: start pulling contracts and Lieutenant bounties, and read the extraction rules properly. If you fail to extract, most of what you were carrying is gone — except what sat in a Secure Slot. TheHajin map guide covers deployment types, threat levels and how the bounties actually complete.
- Before you stop: check what you want to keep. Theprogress carry over page walks through which levels, weapon XP, attachments and camos survive into launch day, and which ones are still unconfirmed.
Is it worth buying the Vault edition for this?
The early access window itself does not require it — both digital editions qualify. Vault adds content, including a DMZ Deployment Bonus and an extra Active Duty Operator slot. Ouredition comparison separates what Activision lists officially from what third-party guides claim, so you can decide without the marketing gloss.
MW4 DMZ Early Access FAQ
When does MW4 DMZ Early Access start?
Modern Warfare 4 DMZ Early Access opens on October 20, 2026 at 10 AM Pacific Time. The official DMZ page states October 20, and the official Call of Duty community announcement on October 20 confirmed that DMZ was live.
Do I need the Vault Edition to get DMZ Early Access?
No. The official requirement is a digital pre-order or pre-purchase of the Standard Digital Edition or the Vault Edition. Both editions qualify for the early access window.
Is DMZ Early Access free?
No. DMZ Early Access is part of the paid game. It is not a free trial and it is not a separate purchase.
Does a physical copy qualify for DMZ Early Access?
According to the official wording we could read, the early access window applies to digital pre-orders and pre-purchases. Physical copies are not named in that wording, so treat physical purchases as not qualifying until Activision says otherwise.
Why does DMZ still say locked after the start time?
Most reported cases during launch day came down to one of four things: the purchase was not a qualifying digital pre-order, the account had not picked up the DMZ content yet, the required update was not installed, or the player had not finished the Gear Up order. Work through the troubleshooting page in that order.
Does my DMZ progress carry over to the full launch?
Official messaging says XP carries into launch, and the wider reporting says levels, weapon XP, attachments and camos carry over. The full item-by-item list is what to check before you commit a weekend to grinding.
