The download is the part most likely to cost you the first session. Here is how much space the game needs, how the preload works on each platform, and a checklist to run the day before.

What matters most

Start the download before October 20 and finish the content package install, not just the base game. The most common launch-day complaint is that DMZ is not selectable — which usually means the DMZ content pack was never installed, not that anything is broken.

The extra update for campaign players

Campaign Early Access opened on October 16, four days before the DMZ window. If you played during those four days, DMZ is not part of the build you have and you will need an additional update — reported at roughly 30–35 GB. How to preload, platform by platform

PS5Preload runs through the Call of Duty HQ app → Manage Game Content → Modern Warfare 4 content packs. Skipping the content pack step is the top cause of a missing DMZ mode.

Xbox SeriesPreload from the Xbox Store or My Library. The install must finish before you can play offline, and the console needs the full storage figure free.

Battle.netPre-download is offered automatically for pre-orders and starts from the launcher without launching the game.

SteamThe download starts when you buy. Verify local files before launch day so a corrupted file does not become a "DMZ will not open" problem.

PC has one extra step console does not: the security requirements on thetroubleshooting page — TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot — which can block the client before it ever reaches the DMZ menu.

Confirm the purchase is a digital pre-order or pre-purchase, and that it is the base game.
Start the download early and finish the content pack install, not only the base game.
Check free disk space against the top of the range for your platform, plus headroom.
On PC: verify game files, and confirm TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot are enabled.
On console: update the system software and the Call of Duty HQ app.
Know your local start time — in Asia and Oceania the window opens on October 21.
Bookmark the official support page in case access does not appear.

How much storage does Modern Warfare 4 need?

The figures we could verify are media-reported rather than officially published: roughly 110–156 GB on PC, about 160 GB on PlayStation, and 160–194 GB on Xbox. Leave headroom above the top of that range.

Do I need extra data for DMZ Early Access?

If you only played the campaign early access you may need an additional 30–35 GB update. If you have never launched the game, expect the full install rather than a patch.

Can I preload DMZ on PS5?

Yes, through the Call of Duty HQ app: open it, go to Manage Game Content, and install the Modern Warfare 4 content packs. Downloading the base game without the content packs selected is the most common reason the mode is missing on launch day.

Does a PlayStation Plus or Game Pass subscription affect access?

Third-party guides report that a subscription is required to play on PlayStation and Xbox because the game is delivered through the console store. Confirm on your own platform before you rely on it.
