The item system
MW4 DMZ gear: what you keep, what you lose, and where it lives
The MW4 DMZ item system has one blunt rule: what you extract is yours, and what you fail to extract is gone. Modern Warfare 4 builds DMZ around a persistent inventory, so every weapon, plate carrier and crafting ingredient is either headed for your Stash or about to be left in Hajin. Here is how the containers work, what happens to each one when a run goes wrong, and where the numbers are still unconfirmed.
MW4 DMZ rebuilds DMZ around a persistent inventory — and a rule you can lose against.
The rule
Extract successfully and you keep what you carried out. Fail, and everything in your Backpack that is not in a Secure Slot is gone — along with the Loadout your Operator was carrying. Your Operator goes MIA. Items in your Stash and the XP you earned are safe.
Where your gear sits
Your gear lives in three places, and the difference between them decides the outcome of a bad run.Media report
What you lose when you fail
This is the table that matters most in the whole mode, so here it is in full. The mechanics are reported by third-party guides that attribute them to Activision's own pre-launch DMZ material.Media report
| Item | Where it sits | Successful exfil | Failed exfil |
|---|---|---|---|
| Loadout weapons and gear | On your Operator | Returns with the Operator | Lost — a rescued Operator returns without gear |
| Backpack items | Backpack slots | Move them to the Stash | Lost |
| Secure Slot items | Upgraded backpacks only | Kept | Kept |
| DMZ Cash found in the run | Carried | Added to your Bank | Not banked |
| Recipes and Weapon Manuals | Carried | Unlocked, plus 5,000 DMZ Cash each | Not unlocked |
| Stash contents | FOB | Safe | Safe |
| Player XP | Your profile | Counts | Still counts |
One useful exception in that table: XP counts even when you die. So a run that ends badly is not a total loss if you were chasing levels rather than loot.
Backpacks and Secure Slots
Without a proper backpack you deploy with the Basic Pack, which has eight slots. Items have stack sizes, so smaller items can share a slot. Every backpack, the Basic Pack included, also has a dedicated pouch for Resources — so Chemicals, Electronics, Metals and Synthetics never compete with your other items for space.Media report
- Small Backpack adds item slots.
- Medium Backpack adds slots and adds Secure Slots. The recipe text for Secure Slots is described as insuring you against losing an item if you fail to exfil.
- Some packs add weapon slots, which matters because the default is two weapons plus a melee weapon in and out.
The exact number of Secure Slots per backpack has not been published in the pre-launch guides, so treat any specific count you read before launch as Unconfirmed. Plan on them being scarce and choose what goes in them carefully.
Resources vs 3D Printer Ingredients
Crafting materials come in two kinds, and they behave completely differently. Getting this wrong wastes Stash space and backpack slots.Media report
- Resources — Synthetics, Electronics, Chemicals and Metals. Looted items break down into them automatically, they collect in the backpack pouch, and their totals sit in the corner of the Stash menuwithout using a slot. You never manage them one by one.
- 3D Printer Ingredients — Binding Catalyst, Biomaterials, Detonators, Control Units, and upgraded components like Rigid Synthetics and Reactive Metals. These do not break down. They are physical items that take backpack space during the run and must be extracted before they reach the printer.
Recipes need both. A Medkit, for example, is described as needing 30 Chemicals, 1 Binding Catalyst and 5 Biomaterials. The printer can pin a recipe or an ingredient so it is flagged when you find it in the field, and it hints at where each ingredient is most likely to turn up.
Killing a Commander and getting out is one confirmed way to earn prized Ingredients.Media report Lieutenants carry customised weapons, and Supply Drops rise from Common to Uncommon to Rare as you complete more Ops in a deployment.
Weapons, manuals and the end of insured slots
This is the biggest mechanical change from the original DMZ, and it is the detail most worth checking in game before you build a plan around it.
In the old DMZ beta an insured weapon slot gave you a gun back after a cooldown. The reported MW4 model replaces that: gear is printed through the 3D Printer, and guns are driven by the DMZ Cash you earn in matches. Any weapon you extract can be taken into the Gunsmith as a single copy and upgraded — and if you lose it on a later run it is gone. Media report
- Weapon Manuals are the gate. To buy a base weapon whenever you like, you first have to find and extract that weapon\'s manual.
- Prices scale. A base M4 is put at around 5,000 DMZ Cash, and each attachment slot costs more than the last. Suppressors, drum mags and thermal or long-range optics are priced higher.
- Looted guns can be better than built ones. Looted weapons carry up to eight attachment slots, while Gunsmith builds top out at five plus an Apex attachment — so a well-equipped rival\'s gun is worth taking.
- Weapon Blueprints can be used once for free in DMZ. If that copy is lost you can rebuy it at a discount.
We are deliberately not repeating the claim that "insured slots are gone" as a fact. What we can say from the sources is that the reported model is manual-gated cash purchases, and that the Vault Edition Deployment Kit lists two Weapon Insurance Contracts whose behaviour has not been explained before launch.Unconfirmed For how this compares with 2022, seeMW4 DMZ vs the original.
Keys, dog tags and mission items
- Keys open special loot rooms, and each key description includes a grid location on the Tac-Map. Lieutenants can drop keys to their own named rooms, which often hold their signature weapon.
- Dog Tags cut both ways. A player who kills you can take your Operator\'s Dog Tag. And a Lieutenant\'s Dog Tag Case broadcasts your position to everyone the moment you pick it up — which is exactly why exfils turn into fights when one is in play.
- Story objectives go into a dedicated Mission Item slot automatically, so they never eat into your Backpack.
- Valuables, marked with a gem icon, can be sold for cash or kept as materials for FOB upgrades.
All Media report — and it is worth knowing that an item broadcasting your position changes the threat calculation of the whole run, which is covered on theHajin map guide.

Habits that protect your items
These follow directly from the rules above rather than from tested strategy — but they are the difference between a bad run and starting over.
