MW4 DMZ vs the original: what changed, and how sure we are

If you played the 2022 DMZ, MW4 DMZ will feel familiar for about a week and then stop feeling familiar at all. The mode was rebuilt around new systems — traits, Prestige, a printed gear economy — and the single most important change is that it is no longer free. Here is the full comparison, with a source grade on every row.

The three changes that break 2022 habits

MW4 DMZ is not free to play. The 2022 DMZ was a free download that did not require owning Modern Warfare 2. MW4 DMZ needs a copy of MW4 — and Activision confirmed on October 15, 2026 that MW4 is a separate purchase and is not available on Game Pass at launch.Official

Everything else on this page is graded the same way. If Activision said it, it saysOfficial. If only guides and media said it, it says Media report. If nobody confirmed it, it says Unconfirmed — including the claims we found that turned out to be wrong.

Why this comparison needs a source column

Most "what changed" articles on this topic are written by people with one source and no way to check it. Three different pages we reviewed during this research each stated something the official material contradicts — one headlined "88 traits" while its own body said 66, one denied that an early-access window existed at all, and one listed mastery camos that appear nowhere in the official DMZ guides.

Activision has published two DMZ Deep Dive guides — Part 1 on the Hajin environments and threats (October 5, 2026) and Part 2 on the Forward Operating Base (October 9, 2026) — plus the official DMZ page and the launch blog. That is enough to grade most of this comparison properly, which is what we do below. Official

Reported changes

Multiple independent guides describe these consistently, but the official material we could open does not state them directly. Media report

The four-container inventory. Loadout, Backpack, Stash and Secure Slot as separate places for your gear, with the Stash staying at the FOB. Covered in detail on theMW4 DMZ gear page.
Resources versus 3D Printer Ingredients. The four basic Resources breaking down automatically and costing no Stash slots, while Ingredients stay as physical items that must be extracted.
MIA and rescue. A failed run leaves your Operator MIA, and rescuing them costs money and returns them without their gear.
Rarity tiers. Common, Uncommon, Rare, Epic and Legendary — and Operator Prestige consuming Rare, then Epic, then Legendary gear.
Level cap. DMZ levels run 1–70, and weapon levels are shared between Multiplayer and DMZ.

Still unconfirmed

These are circulating and we could not verify any of them. We are listing them precisely so you can spot them in other guides. Unconfirmed

How many Secure Slots each backpack has. Not published in the pre-launch guides. Any specific count you read before launch is guesswork.
What the Vault Edition Weapon Insurance Contracts do. They are listed in the Deployment Kit, but Activision has not explained them.
Specific mastery camo names. At least one guide lists three DMZ mastery camos that appear nowhere in either official DMZ Deep Dive. We are not repeating them.
What happens to the 2022 DMZ mode itself now that MW4 DMZ is a rebuild.
Extra trait trees beyond the three official ones. One database counts "88 known traits" by folding unannounced and leaked traits into the same headline number as the 66 Activision has actually shown. Until Infinity Ward shows them, the confirmed count is 66.

The big three

Not free to playThe single biggest change. MW4 DMZ needs a copy of MW4, and MW4 is a separate purchase that is not on Game Pass at launch.

Traits and PrestigeThree trait trees, 66 traits, 18 points and a Prestige track above level 70 — none of it existed in the original.

The printed gear economyA 3D Printer, Weapon Manuals, DMZ Cash and separate Resources versus Ingredients replace insured slots and cooldown insurance.

What carried over unchanged

It is worth being clear about what did not change, because the new systems can obscure it. The core loop is the same one you remember.

Extract it or lose itThe core loop is identical: gear is only yours once you get out with it.

Contracts on a contested mapBounties, Dynamic Operations and Side Ops still structure what you do on the map.

A persistent FOBYour home base still persists between runs and holds the things you bring back.

Is MW4 DMZ free to play like the 2022 DMZ?

No. The 2022 DMZ launched as a free download that did not require owning Modern Warfare 2. MW4 DMZ requires owning Modern Warfare 4, and Activision confirmed on October 15, 2026 that MW4 is a separate purchase and is not available on Game Pass at launch.

Is the original DMZ still playable?

We could not confirm anything about the status of the 2022 MW2 DMZ in MW4, and we are not going to guess. Every source we checked that addressed MW4 DMZ treated it as a rebuild rather than a continuation, but what happens to the old mode was not on any official page we could open.

Did MW4 DMZ keep the insured weapon slots?

Not in the old cooldown form. The reported model is that you extract a weapon manual first, then buy base weapons with DMZ Cash in the Gunsmith. The Vault Edition lists Weapon Insurance Contracts, but Activision has not explained how they work.

Is the map the same as Al Mazrah?

No. MW4 DMZ runs on Hajin, a new Exclusion Zone. The official DMZ Deep Dive Part 1 covers its environments and threats in full.

Did MW4 DMZ Early Access let people play before launch?

Yes, and this is where a lot of older guides go wrong. DMZ Early Access began October 20, 2026 for digital pre-orders, three days before launch. Several pages still claim there is no early-access window at all.
